Way of Zen

By Tenshin Fletcher and David Scott

Hardcover: 191 pages

Way of Zen provides a practical insight into the history and development of Zen, from the Buddhist tradition on which it was founded to the practice in daily life on which it depends. It covers Zen-inspired cultural arts, from archery to karate, and looks at both its present situation and its future in the West.

Way of Zen is essential to any reader interested in the broad dimensions of Zen. For theose seeking a deeper, more practical understanding, the book also provides insights into the day-to-day reality of Zen training. This combined exoteric/esoteric approach is based on the dual experiences of the authors: one is grounded in long traditional monastic traiing, the other in lay practice. The book recommends itself to new and seasoned practitioners and to readers who wish to explore beneath the surface of this seemingly enigmatic but – in reality – very direct tradition.

Charles Tenshin Fletcher, Roshi is abbot of Zen Mountain Center and has been teaching on the mountain since 1995. Originally from Manchester, England, he came to the USA in 1979 to study at the Zen Center of Los Angeles with its founder Taizan Maezumi Roshi. Following sixteen years of training with Maezumi Roshi, he received dharma transmission in1994. Roshi has trained thoroughly in both koan and shikantaza "just sitting" practice and works with students using these traditional and other more recently developed forms.

David Scott is author of over twenty books on Zen, food, and cooking, including The Elements of Zen, Three Bowl Cookbook, and The Japanese Cookbook. He has been practicing Zen for over twenty years, and is a student of Genpo Merzel, Roshi. He also ranks sixth Dan in Karate and is chairman and a founder of the Uechi-Ryu Karate Association (Great Britain). He lives in Liverpool, England.
